AI Tool Cost Index 2026: The Most (and Least) Expensive Professions to Add AI To
We took the cheapest non-custom paid tier of every AI tool in our catalog and mapped it to the professions each tool serves. Then we computed the median monthly cost per profession — so you can see what it actually takes to adopt AI in a given line of work in 2026.
The headline
Most expensive to add AI to: Legal professionals — median $64/month (range $39–$149, based on 4 tools). Big-ticket vertical software — field-service, CRM, licensed-industry workflows — pulls this average up.
Least expensive to add AI to: Landscapers — median $5/month (range $5–$18, based on 3 tools). Entry-level SaaS tiers and lightweight automation dominate at this end of the market.
We only counted paid tiers with a listed price — "custom" and "contact sales" tiers are excluded, so the numbers below reflect what a solo operator or small team can actually put on a card without a sales call.

Methodology
Source data lives in growth/tool-dataset.json in our public repo. It contains 79 AI tools with a listed paid tier and an explicit list of professions each tool serves. Every entry cites the vendor page or affiliate program it was verified against.
- What we counted: for each tool we took the cheapest tier where the price was a real dollar figure. Tiers labelled "custom" or "contact sales" were excluded — they don't represent a price a buyer can actually pay without a sales call.
- Annual → monthly: tiers billed annually are divided by 12 to get a comparable monthly figure.
- Profession mapping: each tool's
professionFitlist was authored by hand during discovery scans and cross-checked against the vendor's own audience copy. A single tool typically appears under multiple professions. - Aggregation: for each profession, we take the median monthly cost of all contributing tools, plus the min–max range. Rows with fewer than 3 tools are flagged as "low sample" — the median of one or two points isn't a market signal, just what happened to land there in our catalog.
- Recency: pricing is verified as of each entry's
verifiedAtdate. The page's "Last updated" stamp shows the latest of those.
The numbers on this page are computed at build time from the JSON dataset — never hand-typed — so refreshes are mechanical: update pricing in the dataset, redeploy, and the medians move.
